According to Encyclopedia Britannica, a shamrock is "any of several similar-appearing trifoliate plants (plants whose leaves are divided into three leaflets). Common shamrocks include the wood sorrel (Oxalis acetosella) of the family Oxalidaceae, or any of various plants of the pea family (Fabaceae), including white clover (Trifolium repens) and suckling clover Trifolium dubium." According to Irish legend, St. Patrick chose the shamrock as a symbol of the church's Holy Trinity because of its three leaflets bound by a common stalk. Wood sorrel is shipped in large quantities from Ireland to other countries for St. Patrick's Day.

The Legend of the Blarney Stone

There is a stone there,

Just northwest of the Irish village of Cork is the village of Blarney. The name Blarney is derived from the Irish An blarna, "the plain." Blarney is home to the 90-foot-tall (27.4-meter) Blarney Castle. The castle visited today is the third one built at the site and was erected in 1446.

Built on a rock, above several caves, the tower originally had three stories. On the top story, just below the battlements on the parapet, is the world famous Blarney Stone. While its origins are unknown, the Blarney Stone is said to give the gift of eloquence (beautiful speaking ability) to all who kiss it. Today, "Blarney" means "the ability to influence and coax with fair words and soft speech without offending."

Kissing the stone is quite a physical feat. You have to sit with your back to the stone, and a local guide or friend sits on your legs or firmly holds your feet. Then you lean back and down into the darkness between the castle's 18-foot-thick (5.5-meter) walls and, grasping the iron rails, lower yourself until your head is even with the stone.

One local legend claims that an old woman, saved from drowning by a king of Munster, rewarded him with a spell that if he would kiss a stone on the castle's top, he would gain a speech that would win all to him. It is not known, however, when and how the word Blarney entered the English language and the dictionary.

Saint Patrick's Day has come to be
green and gold, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick's Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide. The Irish are descendants of the ancient
Celts, but the Vikings, Normans and English contributed to the ethnic nature of the people. Centuries of English rule largely eliminated the use of the ancient Gaelic, or Irish, language. Most Irish are either Catholics or Protestants (Anglicans, members of the Church of England).

So, why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that that is the day that St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins.

In American cities with a large Irish population, St. Patrick's Day is a very big deal. Big cities and small towns alike celebrate with parades, "wearing of the green," music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. Some communities even go so far as to dye rivers or streams green!

Ireland has seen the most explosive growth to its economy in the last ten years as thousands of well educated graduates pour onto the Jobs market. Many have found success overseas as entrepreneurs and it is well known that when someone leaves their own backyard for pastures new they tend to work much harder.
When it comes to Learning to drive however, the opposite is the case and we have a situation here in Ireland that is beyond belief. Only we have to believe it since it is now one of the hottest topics throughout the media. We are one of the few developed countries not just in Europe, but in the World as a whole, that has failed to put into place a sensible, manageable Learner Driver system that will save lives and reduce the misery caused by needless teenage deaths behind the wheel.
The system, for what its worth (and it sure isnt worth much) was unable to cope with the changing demographics in Ireland seven years ago. Today Learning to Drive in Ireland is in free fall with Drivers not being taught the basics; not being supervised; not preparing adequately for the Driving Test and being allowed to drive away after failing the Driving Test with not a care in the world.
The basic structure as it pertains in other countries is that you must have supervised driving at all times when learning to drive until passing the driving Test and that you must take Driving Lessons from an accredited Driving School before you are allowed to sit the Driving Test.
Sitting the Driving Test when you cannot drive is rather like booking a Scuba Diving holiday in a faraway place when you have only paddled in the shallow end of your local swimming pool. No one would dream of hiring Scuba gear without first having serious professional instruction. In fact the gear wouldnt even be handed out without questions being asked by the owner of the Scuba Shop. So learning to Drive comes first not after failing the Driving Test several times.
The big hullabaloo about the ever lengthening wait for a Driving Test appointment in Ireland is a ridiculous smokescreen in my opinion, which many Politicians have utilised to get publicity over the last two years.
If there is no formalised legal structure for Learning to Drive and then sitting the Driving Test, then it is obvious that many new drivers, in fact the majority, are going to take the easy way out and try to bluff their way through. The results most of the time will be failure on the Driving Test and rejoining the end of the queue which just gets longer.
It has been a vicious circle for years and there is no real end in sight until the newly established Road Safety Authority manages to persuade the Department of Transport to actually implement all the various learning to drive recommendations that have been piling up on Ministerial desks for years.
There is a chance to reduce the death toll on Irish roads but only when a suitably rigid and enforced Learner Driver and Driving Test regime is put in place. The coming year will see some of the proposals implemented but of course the results will take quite some time to be recognisable.
In the meantime the practise of Irish Learner Drivers buying a car before learning to drive and applying for the Driving Test and then wondering why they fail, or as is often the case, have serious accidents, will continue with the obvious painful results.

You decide...Michael J. Fox is either ill-informed, or he's a liar. Sympathies for his current condition aside, the debate as he frames it is not accurate. Stem cell research is not in danger of being outlawed. The only thing the Republicans are wanting to do is end Federal funding of the research. Considering that a private university somewhere will rake in millions in profit from whatever the research yeilds, I see no reason for my private money to be used as part of their research. What IS in danger of being outlawed is human embryonic cloning. There are plenty of other reasons to not vote Republican without resorting to lies & misleading statements. (more)

unfortunately overlooked in many American-taught world history
classes. Grace O'Malley was a true heroine for many reasons and
by way of many pursuits, and The Pirate Queen is a mesmerizing
look at her amazing life of struggle and triumph.

The Story

The Pirate Queen is a biography of Grace O'Malley, an Irish
hero who lived during the late 16th and early 17th Centuries.
This was a turbulent time in world history, as Queen Elizabeth
I of England had grown increasingly uneasy in regards to the
relative instability of Ireland's government, and England began
to assert its authority over Ireland. This was the beginning of
a struggle that in some ways continues to this day, and the
very reason that The Pirate Queen tickets are worth the effort
to obtain.

Given that historical setting, it appears now that O'Malley was
destined to ultimately cross paths with the queen as a result of
her own life. O�Malley was born in 1530, and her family had a
long tradition of making their living as prominent seafarers.
Grace was always interested in the ways of the sea, but as was
custom at the time, she was arranged in marriage, and this was
to take place when Grace was 15.

Grace went through with the marriage and had three children.
However, her husband was part of a warring faction, and he was
ultimately killed in battle. As a result, local warriors turned
towards Grace for guidance and leadership, even though Gaelic
law prohibited women from holding such positions of power.

The faction that had killed her husband had taken over the
castle he was defending, but Grace led a legion of soldiers and
retook the castle, thereby renaming it �Hen�s Castle,� a name
which is still in place today. Her extreme bravery and cunning
led many to follow her into a life of mercenary battles.

Ultimately, Grace remarried, and her destiny-determined foe,
Queen Elizabeth and England, together with several Irish
barons, began to encroach on Ireland. Grace and her soldiers
fought valiantly for freedom from the crown, but ultimately too
many forces against her united and her territory was overrun by
a baron with a specific vendetta against Grace.

Grace�s son was captured, and Grace decided to go over the
local baron�s head and directly to Queen Elizabeth I herself.
This meeting remains the stuff of legend, and the ultimate
conclusion of this life of seafaring and battling is something
to behold on stage.
